The Civil War period Union Navy cap insignia are of dark blue wool cloth & consists of a gold wreath in front, composed of oak & olive branches, 3 inches in width & inclosing the following devices:- (15-A) For a real Admiral - 2 Silver stars (15-B) For Commodore, Captain, Commander, Lt. Commander, Lt., Master& Ensign - A Silver Foul Anchor. (15-C) for professor of Mathematics - the letter "P" in silver & in relief upon a plain gold circle. (15-D) for pay masters - An oak sprig, composed of 3 leaves in silver in vertical position. (15-E) for Chaplains - a silver cross in an oblique position (15-F) for secretaries - the letter "S" in silver (15-G) for engineers - 4 oak leaves in silver in the form of a cross (15-H) for Medical Officers - An oak leaf in silver in a vertical position (15-I) for Naval Constructors - a sprig composed of 2 leaves of live-oak in silver in vertical position (15-J) for all other officers - simply the wreath.
