Product Overview
The Model 1862 Confederate Officer’s Kepi reflects a distinctive phase in kepi civil war uniform development. Adopted during 1862, this second-pattern design was created to clearly identify officer rank and branch of service within the Confederate Army.
Unlike earlier field styles, this confederate kepi features the entire cap constructed in the color of the officer’s branch—traditionally red, yellow, or blue. Prominently displayed on the front is gold Austrian braid, with the number of braid rows indicating officer rank. The result was a visually striking civil war confederate kepi that made rank immediately recognizable.
Although impressive in appearance, the bright coloration proved impractical under battlefield conditions. By late 1862, many officers limited its use in active combat due to increased visibility, and the style became more closely associated with garrison duty, ceremonial settings, and senior leadership roles.
A leather chin strap is included, representing the wartime transition from functional adjustment to a simpler non-adjustable format. Today, the Model 1862 pattern remains an iconic example of Confederate officer headgear, suitable for reenactment, living history interpretation, museum presentation, and private collections.
