Product Overview

The Plated Brass Mail Armor Shirt is crafted from butted 16 gauge steel rings in the traditional International Pattern, using the classic four-in-one (4 links through a 5th) construction. Each steel ring is plated with brass to provide an attractive finish and added durability. The shirt measures 33 inches in length with approximately 18-inch sleeves, fits up to a 54-inch chest, and weighs approximately 23 pounds. Faithfully reproduced from examples found in museums and private collections, it offers an authentic appearance for historical collections and reenactment.

Mail armor was one of the most valued forms of personal protection for centuries, being used from the time of the Celts around 300 BC through much of Europe and into parts of Asia until the 18th century. The International Pattern, commonly known as the four-in-one weave, became one of the most widespread styles of European mail. This reproduction follows that traditional construction while featuring brass-plated steel rings for a distinctive finish.

Historically, mail shirts were worn by warriors as protective body armor in battle. Today, the Plated Brass Mail Armor Shirt is ideal for medieval reenactments, living history events, museums, collectors, stage productions, and historical displays. To help preserve its appearance, the manufacturer recommends keeping the mail armor lightly oiled at all times.
