The Hardee hat was the regulation dress hat for the enlisted men in the Union Army as well as some Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. This insignia is worn on the hat and depicts a golden eagle on a black velvet background with a banner of stars in the beak, with the background in the center showing the army branch color.
