Product Overview

The French Napoleonic Infantry/Artillery Short Sword is a faithful reproduction of the Model 1831 sword used by French infantry and artillery troops during the 19th century. Based on the earlier Model 1816, its design was influenced by the Roman Gladius, the famous short sword carried by Roman legionaries. This replica features a solid brass hilt with the distinctive ringed grip introduced on the Model 1831, a sharpened blade, and a matching scabbard with brass throat and tip. A leather belt frog is also included, completing the traditional military presentation.

Although capable of serving as a sidearm when required, the Model 1831 became widely known for its practical role as a field tool. French soldiers commonly used it to clear brush and vegetation around artillery positions, earning it the nickname "coupe-chou," meaning "cabbage cutter." Its practical design and versatility kept it in French military service until around 1870, and it later inspired the U.S. Model 1832 Foot Artillery Sword.

Made by Windlass Steelcrafts, this historically accurate reproduction is ideal for collectors, military history enthusiasts, historical displays, and Napoleonic collections. Its combination of authentic design, solid brass construction, and historical significance makes it an outstanding addition to any collection of military swords.
